Marva Allen

Ernie Young’s Excello catalogue is a real treasure trove of obscure 56s by even more obscure singers. The single by Mildred Woodard is a case in point – as is this one by the unknown Marva Allen. He’s Gone is an excellent piece of southern soul, led by some nice guitar arpeggios underpinned by a very churchy organ. The horn bursts are well done but the key to the number is Marva’s demonstrative delivery, nicely rendered and full of gospel touches. The song itself is a lovely blend of doo wop and the blues. Very nice indeed!
