Gloria Bouschell
Chicago singer Gloria Bouschell, who cut sessions for both Gene Chandler and writer Eugene Dixon was a hard hitting vocalist, as tough a singer as they come. Although the funk fans have discovered “Don’t Make Me Get Another Man” the similarly styled warning “Watch Your Close Friend Girl” sounds to me just as good. But the clear favourite from this sassy vocalist for me is her version of Curtis Mayfield’s waltz time ballad Hold On. Now I love Curtis to bits, a musical genius for sure, but he never got close to the level of fire and fury that Gloria brings to it. The feel of this track is very much Aretha’s “I’ve Never Loved A Man” and that’s quite a recommendation.
