Leon Byrd
Unfortunately I don’t know anything about
Leon Byrd, but I do recognise a fine Memphis soul 45 when I hear one. “I
  Got Love” is a good
uptempo southern groover – love the baritone sax. I
Catch Myself Crying is a version of the song that Little Richie cut earlier for
SS7 and beats it in terms of emotional impact. A good deep soul side. And
while Byrd’s acceptable vocal won’t set the world on fire, the
playing of Chips Moman’s AGP rhythm section is impeccable as always.
This disc shows both the depth of Richbourg’s SS7 catalogue, and how
far the reissue programme of it has still to go.
