Darker Shades Of Black
Another tiny label obscurity that deserves a much better fate And Then You Came is basically a man/woman duet with occasional background voices. Both lead singers are really good, check out his interjections on the female verse and his gritty determination just before the second chorus – you’ve got to love those falsetto shrieks as well. Sadly I’ve no idea who these people are or even where they came from as the information on the label is sparse to say the least. As the disc is a stereo single I’d say it came from the mid 70s but even that is conjecture. The flip is a somewhat messy funk item.
Any info at all on the group or its wonderful singers would be very welcome.
UPDATE ~ The great expert on group soul Bob Abrahamian has kindly been in touch to say that this group also recorded as Darker Shades Ltd (now in the discography) and that they probably came from Texas, the location for the ACR label. I'm very grateful to him. And to Rob Sevier from the Numero Group who put out those excellent Eccentric Soul CDs who has given me the extraordianary info that the lead singer of the group is no other than Louisiana R & B star Classie Ballou! Amazing! Who would have thought it. Rob adds that Numero will be including a track from the Darker Shades in their Omnibus Box Set of 45s. You can find a "flyer" for the set here. The whole set will be a must have for all soul collectors for sure. I can't wait!
