Edna Echols

Edna Echols shared a 45 on Mitchell with Gary Wicks, but the 45 that Holly Springs, MS based label owner William B Mitchell put out on his Vimla imprint is better known. The lively “Keep On Walking” is strong southern soul, but I prefer Edna’s lovely deep clear tones on the tuneful ballad ListenPromise Me Love which allows her to show off her fine sense of timing and sensitivity. As far as I know this was her only secular 45.

But Edna was still singing gospel music in this millennium I’m very pleased to say. You can catch her with the Heavenly Echoes here. The song was penned by Dwight E Mitchell – is he related to William B Mitchell?

UPDATE
~ Dean Rudland from Ace records kindly writes to say that "I thought it might interest you to know that I found the Edna Echols tape at Sounds Of Memphis, suggesting that it may have been recorded there." It certainly does interest me! I'm grateful to Dean for getting in touch with this fine info.
