E Gaunichaux & The Skeptics

It’s not difficult to set this track in Louisiana from the group’s name but finding out any information about them seems to be impossible. The label is just as obscure – I don’t know of any other releases on it. So we’re left with just what we can read on the label and deduce from the music. The tracks were cut at Rosemont Studios in New Orleans around the turn of the 70s I would assume, by a guy called E Laparge, names all new to me. The Skeptics were a fairly large aggregation, featuring at least two horns, as can be heard on the funky instrumental “Afro Bush” but on the excellent ballad ListenSweeter Than Mine (Sweeter Than Wine) the focus is all on the vocalist (?) and writer E Gaunichaux. And he really delivers – hoarse and compelling over a classic southern soul styled arrangement.

Any info at all on this group would be gratefully accepted.
