Benny Hall

Benny Hall came from Rock Hill, SC and made a couple of 45s for the tiny local Mammoth label. The best known is the very good double sided ListenLet Them Talk / “I Need You”. Despite the South Carolina source, I’m quite sure these sides were recorded in Muscle Shoals with the Fame Gang. Freeman Brown’s drumming and Clayton Ivey’s keyboard playing is quite obvious, so it may well be that these sides were cut a little earlier than the release date given as 1976. Hall’s version of Sonny Thompson’s evergreen “Let Them Talk” is a beauty, full of fiery vocals and the usual sensitive playing of the Alabama crew.

Hall’s other 45 was recorded in the Carolinas but isn’t in the same class sadly.
