Chris Harris

A key member of the Delacardos, Chris Harris also tried his hand at solo recordings for Buddy Killen’s Dial label, having three 45s released through the mid 60s. His initial single ListenYou Really Fooled Me was an easy paced swaying ballad on which his gruff hard edged tone was at its very best, especially toward the run out groove. His comrade in the Delacardos, Ronnie Greer got a co-writing credit.

Harris’ second Dial release is easily his most obscure, and frankly deserves to be as well. Both the messy “roll of soul honour” track “So Much Soul” and the similarly paced “Why Can’t We Get Along” don’t do a lot for me. The Invaders behind him on both sides could well be the Delacardos moonlighting.

Much better is his final offering. This 45 was recorded with the excellent AGP band in Memphis and the higher production values and musicianship work a treat. The accurately titled “Dr Funky” is a southern groover of rare quality as Harris chants out his bragging tale over a slinky guitar / bass riff and big climbing horns. Terrific! The other side ListenTell ‘Em I Am Who I Am is taken at a slightly slower pace but packs a similarly big punch. Great chugging Memphis beat, another fine horn arrangement plus Harris’ hi octane vocals – what isn’t there to like?
