Fabulous Little Joe
The Fabulous Little Joe had a couple of 45s out on the West Coast around the turn of the 60s. On the first one for Nanc he was splendidly billed as “The Fabulous Little Joe Arlee Carrethers”. The top side was a very fine piece of rocking R & B called “Down In New Orleans” and given that I guess his surname was "Carriere" from the writer credit on both of his 45s he might well have come from there.
Anyway the Fabulous Little Joe on cult writer / producer Lee Hazlewood’s Eden label introduces his odd-ball deep ballad waltz Lies Trouble And Love with some very nice Louisiana piano before his gritty vocal brings in some righteous female assistants and a big horn section. Joe’s voice is more R & B than soul really but despite that I do enjoy this track – another one that grows on you the more you play it.
