Ray Jenning

Esprit was a tiny Georgia label based in Atlanta. The funky instrumentals by the Minors, really Richard Marks, aren’t to my taste, but the fine ballad "On This Earth" by the Barons certainly is. But better than that even is this superb deep soul cut by the obscure Ray Jenning. ListenI’ve Got My Pride features a terrifically committed vocal over a classic 12/8 rhythm of super organ and guitar, supplemented by some wonderful horn charts. Music doesn’t get much better than this for me. The uptempo flip is fine southern soul as well.
