Allen Matthews
The Bubbles label was owned and operated by that interesting – and talented – music man Charles Spurling from his Cincinnati home. And although Spurling’s final two 45s on the label featured himself, the first two releases went to local musician (keyboard player?) Allen Matthews. All four of his tracks were produced by him alone, and they have gradually increased in price over the years so that today they are both very expensive, which goes hand in hand with their increasing rarity as well.
The track that the dancers all want is the rather vapid “Allen’s Party”, although “I Can Tell” has its supporters as well. But both flip sides are far stronger than those two. “Good Loving Care” is a good demonstrative ballad, but best of all is the tuneful toe tapper Give Love Another Chance which suits Matthews quavering vocals well and which features a well constructed horn chart as well. After these 1970 tracks Matthews doesn’t seem to have recorded any more tracks.
