Nunnie & The Enchanted Heartbreakers
This totally obscure but brilliant release has a melodic tone and an evocative feel that is absolutely in line with the group’s wonderful name. The gentle introduction to I Stand Alone from the twin saxes sets up the mood superbly. Which is carried through by the demonstrative lead voice and even though the bridge ups the rhythm a little this only serves as a delicious counterpart to the main event which winds to a tender conclusion. The garage band instrumental flip could mean that Nunnie and his crew might be white.
The disc, issued in 1967, was recorded in Wilmington, Delaware at the Ken-Del studios which are still going strong 50 years on. I’ve emailed them to ask if anybody recalls Nunnie & The Enchanted Heartbreakers but I haven’t yet received a reply sadly.
