Paul Walters
The 521 club in Brooklyn, NY had a small number of releases on its own label in the early 60s, of which the Little David releases are particularly recommended. But for sheer quality I don’t think you can top this 45 by the obscure Paul Walters. The rarity of the disc and the danceability of “I Know What Love Is All About” have raised the price of it to ridiculous levels, but maybe She Put Me Down is worth the money. Listening to the lovely guitar intro you might well think this was recorded in Georgia or Tennessee, and the way the horns come in at the second verse is sheer joy. Walters is suitably sad at the heartbreak lyric and you gotta love the modulation as the song changes key two thirds of the way through. A classic deep soul ballad.
